On December 20, just after lunch, Richard received a call from the RSPCA Lottery team. At first, he hesitated, wondering if it might be a scam call. But when he saw it was a Brisbane number, he answered. “They asked if I was sitting down, and I said, ‘I am now,’” Richard recalled with a laugh. “When they told me I’d won first prize, my heart started palpitating. The LandCruiser Sahara holds special significance for Richard, who’s been a loyal LandCruiser owner for 20 years. “It’s a beautiful car,” he said. Winning the gold bullion, however, was a completely new experience. “It’s the first time I’ve ever owned gold, and it’s incredibly exciting.”

Keeping the Secret—and Sharing the Joy

Keeping the win a secret from his wife for three hours—while they had visitors—was a challenge. “She couldn’t believe I kept a straight face,” Richard admitted. When he finally shared the news with his son later that day, who now drives his former LandCruiser, the reaction was priceless. “He was like, ‘You’ve won what?!’”

Richard’s excitement grew as he jumped online to confirm the win and received a personal call from RSPCA’s Queensland Fundraising General Manager. “Jim was fantastic—so professional and genuinely excited for me. He stayed in touch throughout the process and made the whole experience special.”

For Richard, the win is a reminder of the incredible work the RSPCA does. “Every day I drive, I’ll think about the great work the RSPCA does. Based on your slogans I see all the time, I think every day is going to be a ‘pawfect’ day,” he joked. “I’ll have a permanent smile on my face.”

Richard’s Advice to Future Ticket Buyers

His advice to others considering buying tickets? “Buy tickets! Buy heaps of tickets! The odds in lotteries of this nature are way better, and you’re helping a fantastic cause. If you believe in helping animals and what animals can do for our community, the RSPCA is an amazing organization to support.”
